MARSEILLES – Virgil H. Applebee, age 82, of Marseilles, passed away Saturday morning, June 17, 2017 at Rivershores in Marseilles.
Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Gladfelter Funeral Home where funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. with Reverend Duane Kaufman officiating. Visitation will be held from 11:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Private burial will be held at a later date at Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles.
Virgil was born May 27, 1935 in Rutland Township, the son of Walter Virgil and Stella Belle (Bannon) Applebee. He married Virjean Gretencord May 5, 1956 in Ottawa. She preceded him in death September 2, 2012. Virgil is survived by his children, Luann (Larry) Yackley of Minooka, Julie Van de Warker of Marseilles, Timothy (Lorri) Applebee of Marseilles, and Gina (Mark) Armstrong of St. Charles; his grandchildren, Erin Applebee, Laura (Justin) Hayward, Emily Van de Warker, Kyle Applebee, Elizabeth Armstrong, and Dave (Jen) Eisert; three great grandchildren, Nicholas Hayward, Katelyn Darling, and Cory Eisert; and brothers, Marvin (Judy) Applebee of La Salle and Wayne Applebee of Ottawa. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Virginia Heermann and Dolores Schroeder; and a sister in-law, Karen Applebee.
Virgil was retired from GE Plastics. He always had a heart for animals, especially his coon dogs, chickens, horses, and rabbits. Virgil spent many afternoons in his vegetable garden and could always be found on his Cub Cadet lawnmower. He was a member of the Coon Hunters Club of Grand Ridge. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
