Vernis Jean (Morganflash) Murphy

OTTAWA – Vernis Jean “Tippy” Murphy, 82, of Ottawa, passed away Thursday morning, December 4, 2014 at Ottawa Pavilion.

Funeral services will be held at noon Monday, December 8, 2014 at Gladfelter Funeral Home with Reverend David M. Kipfer officiating.  Burial will follow in St. Columba Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. till 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon at Gladfelter Funeral Home with prayers at 1:45 p.m.  Pallbearers will be Raymond Murphy, Jr., James Taylor, James Murphy, Jr., H.J. Morganflash, John Doyle, and John Murphy.  Honorary pallbearers will be her grandchildren, Sean, Katherine and Jennifer Doyle and Cara, J.J. and the late Melissa Murphy.

Vernis was born March 14, 1932 in Marseilles, the daughter of Fred and Selma (Carlson) Morganflash.  She married Raymond Murphy, Sr. April 29, 1949 at Crown Point, IN.  He preceded her in death June 26, 2005.  Surviving are her son, Raymond Jr. of Ottawa; her grandchildren, Katherine Doyle of Hawaii, Jennifer Doyle of Saudi Arabia, Sean (Sarah) Doyle of Brazil, and Cara and J.J. Murphy, both of Ottawa; her sister, Hilda Shanley of California; and her nieces and nephews, James Murphy, Patricia Mitchell, and Shirley Veith, all of Ottawa, Sally Janzen of Kansas, Michael Shanley of California, Janet Gibson of Marseilles, Harold Morganflash of Mazon, Jerry Lee Morganflash of Seneca, Kathleen Kittower of California, and Jacqueline Villareal of Chicago.  She was preceded in death by her daughter, JoAnn Doyle; one granddaughter, Melissa Murphy; four brothers, Harry Shanks, and Harold, Fred, and Ross Morganflash; one sister, Phyllis Murphy, and her daughter in-law, Pamela Murphy.

Vernis was a member of St. Columba Church.  In her leisure time she enjoyed camping, reading a good book, and cooking.  Her most treasured times were those spent with her family and grandchildren.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
