OTTAWA – Russell L. “Rusty” Sherman, age 92, of Ottawa, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at St. Margaret’s Hospital, Spring Valley.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2013 at Gladfelter Funeral Home with Reverend Duane Kaufman officiating. Burial will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park with full military rites being accorded by the Ottawa Veterans Group. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday afternoon at the funeral home.
Russell was born September 30, 1920 in Ottawa, a son of Frank A. and Mildred (McEwing) Sherman. He married Marie Bruno April 20, 1946 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in La Salle. She preceded him in death September 2, 1994. Russell is survived by his son, Daniel (Mary) Sherman of Wauconda, Illinois; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one son, one brother, and one sister.
Russell proudly served his country in the United States Navy from July 25, 1942 through January 8, 1946. His occupations included working as a painter for 46 years, working for the Times Newspaper for 4 years, and also working at The Medicine Shop for 13 years. Russell was a member of the American Legion, the VFW, and the Moose Lodge, all in Ottawa. In his leisure time Russell enjoyed fishing and had an amazing talent for growing exceptional tomatoes.
