Richard "Dale" Hartshorn

Dale Hartshorn passed away Sunday morning, October 3, 2010 at Pleasant View Luther Home on his 75th birthday. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at Epworth United Methodist Church with Pastor Nancy Rethford officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at Gladfelter Funeral Home. Entombment will be in the Shrine of Rest Mausoleum at Oakwood Memorial Park Mausoleum. Dale was born on October 3, 1935, in Ottawa, the fifth of seven children, to Bertha Elizabeth (Heiman) and Harold Joseph Hartshorn. Dale attended Jefferson Grade School and Ottawa High School where he was on the football team. Dale was married to Shirley Jean (Anweiler) for 24 years and had two children, Gregory Stanford and Kim Marie. Later he was also married to Nancy (Conerly-Ballerini) Lewis for a time. He worked for various employers during his lifetime, but is mostly remembered for his time and service with the LaSalle County Highway Department, Dooley's Shell Service Station on W. Main Street, and for his 38 years at U.S. Silica where he was a Pit Supervisor. Dale was involved with the Boy Scouts of America as Scoutmaster, and Assistant Scoutmaster, for Troop 51 jointly sponsored by the First Presbyterian, First Congregational, and the First United Methodist Churches. He was also a member of the Order of the Arrow where he achieved the honour of Brotherhood. As a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Dale was very active in the Methodist Men's group, a regular Sunday service usher, and a Counting Steward for many years. Dale participated many times in the annual fishing trip to Ely, MN sponsored by the church. Dale is survived by his children, Gregory (Mary) Hartshorn of Morris, Kim Hartshorn of North Dakota; two grandsons, Zachary Hartshorn of Wyoming, and Andrew Hartshorn of Morris. Two sisters, Helen (Fred) Tress and Judie (Dale) McConville both of Ottawa; his brother Donald (Dee) Hartshorn of Leland and his long time friend and companion Pat Workman, also survive him, along with many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, two sisters, Mary (Harry) Barnett of Ottawa, and Dorothy (John) Polancic of Rochelle, and his brother George (Donna) Hartshorn of Wisconsin. The preferred form of remembrance is a donation to the building fund at Epworth United Methodist Church of Ottawa.
