Refugio Kate Jarigese, age 87, of Ottawa, passed away Saturday, January 11, 2014 at the Ottawa Pavilion.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 17, 2014 at St. Patrick Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Ottawa Avenue Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. till 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening with prayer service at 4:00 p.m. at Gladfelter Funeral Home.
Kate was born September 10, 1926 in Guarachita, Michoacan, Mexico, a daughter of Alfonso and Crescenciana (Martinez) Bautista. She married Jess Jarigese December 7, 1946 in Zamora, Michoacan, Mexico. He preceded her in death August 12, 1965. Surviving are her children, Dave Jarigese of Princeton, Jim (Candy) Jarigese of Ottawa, Mary Ann (Joe) Hert of Streator, Sue (Dale) Baxter of Ottawa and Rose (Rommy) Cummings of Marseilles. Also surviving are stepchildren, Fred Jarigese of Westminster, Colorado, Lupe Forster of Woodridge, Illinois, Helen Kells-Murphy of Shelton, Connecticut and Margaret Slafer of Ottawa. She also leaves fourteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Pasquale; a daughter, Rose Marie; two brothers Silvestre and Pedro Bautista; and a sister, Felicitas Vasquez.
Kate was a member of St. Patrick Church. She retired in 2009 after 43 years of service in caring for the St. Patrick Rectory. She was a member of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Society. She received a beautification award from the City of Ottawa for her flower gardens. She was also the recipient of the Ioannes Pavlus II Pont. Maximvs Award.
