Mary E. (Cox) Collins

June 18, 1915 — February 23, 2014

Mary E. Collins, age 98, passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014, at Pleasant View located in Ottawa, Illinois.

Mary was born June 18, 1915, in Ames, Iowa. She was the fifth child of seven children to Charles and Mattie (Martha Mae) Glenn Cox.  Starting with the eldest sibling, they were:  Clarence, Irene, Gladys, Charles, Glen and Lucile, who are deceased.  Mary was a 1933 graduate from Ames High School.

On June 8, 1945, Mary E. Cox married Frank L. Grimes in Ames, Iowa, Story County.  Frank and Mary celebrated the birth of their daughter Linda C. Grimes in February, 1948.  On April 13, 1957, Frank and Mary were divorced.

After 25 service years, Mary retired from The Des Moines Register and Tribune.  Much of her career centered on selling advertising space for the newspaper.  She had won several company awards.  Her main focus was providing for the needs of her daughter Linda.  Mary attended the Lutheran Church services at Pleasant View.

Mary is survived by her daughter Linda Lackey and son-in-law Larry Lackey of Versailles, Missouri: two step-granddaughters Sandra Lackey in Wheaton, Illinois and Patricia Perna and husband Joseph Perna in Winfield, Illinois; two step-great-grandsons Samuel Perna and Matthew Perna.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, March 1st, at the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home in Versailles, Missouri, with Reverend Michael Keith officiating.  Graveside services and interment will follow in the Versailles Cemetery.  The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Saturday, at the funeral home.  Memorial contributions are suggested to the Versailles United Methodist Church.  Expressions of sympathy may be left online at www.kidwellgarber.com .  Arrangements are under the direction and care of the Kidwell-Garber Funeral Home of Versailles.  Gladfelter Funeral Home assisted the family with local arrangements.
