Laverne Mae (Sweig) Cheatham

May 1, 1923 — October 14, 2018

LaVerne Mae Cheatham, age 95, of Marseilles, passed away Sunday, October 14, 2018 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday, October 18, 2018 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Marseilles with Reverend Ghislain Inai officiating.  Interment will follow in Riverview Cemetery, Marseilles.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. on Thursday at Gladfelter-Roetker Funeral Home in Ottawa.  Pallbearers will be Austin Jeanblanc, Jacob Jeanblanc, Michael Cheatham, Daniel Cheatham, Jr., Damon Ekstam, Donald Cheatham, Jr., and Logan Cheatham.

LaVerne was born May 1, 1923 in Iron Mountain, MI, the daughter of Earl and Eva (Peiche) Sweig.  She married Stanley Cheatham December 18, 1943 in Evanston, IL.  He preceded her in death January of 1974.  Surviving are her children, Dennis L. (Gail) Cheatham of Brentwood, TN, and their children, Dennis Jr., Michael, Matthew, Marc, and Marshall; Diana M. Ekstam of Marseilles, and her children, Dawn Jeanblanc, Denise, Danielle Borowski, and Damon; Donald B. (Adrianne) Cheatham of Crystal Falls, MI, and their children, Donald Jr. and Angela; David S. (Rose) Cheatham of Eagle Point, OR, and their children, David J., Christina Ivey, and Jodi Remington; and Dr. Daniel L. (Lisa) Cheatham of Ottawa, and their children, Daniel Jr., Rebecca Keesee, and Michael; and one brother, Thomas (Ginger) Sweig of Niagra, WI.  She also leaves 33 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by a grandson, David Cheatham II, four brothers, Earl, Clarence, Francis, and Jim Sweig, and one sister, Henrietta Goudreau.

LaVerne was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marseilles and had formerly worked for Owens Illinois in Streator.  She was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries.  Her special interests included cooking, bowling, and going on bus tours with her friends.  And she loved to dance.  She adored her family and cherished her time spent with them, especially their family gatherings.
