Katharine L. (Gerstner) Higdon

August 22, 1941 — August 8, 2015

MARSEILLES - On Friday, August 22, 1941, one of the most amazing, creative, loving, caring, giving and yes, quirky individuals was brought into this world, Katharine L. (Gerstner) Higdon.  She was the light of many people’s lives including her husband, Mark, of over 20 years, 3 kids –Laura (Parks) Schaibley, Nick (Laura) Parks and Will (Jennifer) Parks, 6 grandchildren, Dustin (Brittany) Torres, Schuyler, Sedona, Sterling, Justine and Gwenyth Parks; and one great grandchild, Makinley Torres and countless Illinois River Visitor Center Junior Rangers who went through her classes over the past 30 plus years, some of which, their children also went through her Junior Ranger class.  She also made many, many friends each year at Starved Rock’s annual Eagle Watch.

“Ranger Kathy”, as she affectionately became known as, had the dubious opportunity to take on a new Park Ranger position in God’s land on Saturday, August 8, 2015.  Her husband and children were by her side when she accepted this new position

She grew up on the east side of Ottawa with her brother, Horace “Sonny” Jerome and sisters, Geraldine Schillings and Caroline Theirs all of whom preceded her in death.  She attended Wesleyan University in Bloomington after high school and then returned to the eastside to raise her family.  She was also preceded in death by her second husband Rich Eccleston.  Although this big-hearted individual will be greatly missed, we all know that her grandchildren now have a guardian angel looking over their shoulder at every step.  We are also fairly certain that God’s gardens will look much better as she will have more time to spend doing one of her greatest passions, gardening. We sincerely appreciate all the kind thoughts, words and prayers you all have sent her way over the past few months.  Gladfelter Funeral Home is handling arrangements. While visitation and funeral plans are private, we invite you to recall your fondest memories of her. Next time you spot a bald eagle, think of her and say a prayer.  Memorial contributions to Pet Project in Katharine’s name would be most appreciated.

In remembrance of her we share the following chorus: “And He will raise you up on eagles' wings, bear you on the breath of dawn, make you to shine like the sun, and hold you in the palm of His hand.”  To sign the guestbook or share a memory, please visit www.gladfelterfuneralhome.com or Gladfelter Funeral Home on Facebook.
