MONTGOMERY – Howard James Hinterlong, age 75, of Montgomery, formerly of Sheridan, passed away Thursday, August 2, 2012 at Alden at Waterford, Aurora, Illinois.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 6, 2012 at Dieterle Memorial Home, 1120 South Broadway, Montgomery, Illinois, with Father Robert Jones of St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Sugar Grove officiating.  Visitation will be from Noon to 2:00 p.m. Monday at Dieterle Memorial Home.  Gladfelter Funeral Home, Ottawa, Illinois is honored to handle arrangements.

Howard James Hinterlong was born June 22, 1937 at Naperville, Illinois, a son of Leo and Viola (Berg) Hinterlong.  Howard is survived by his children, Jody (Ron) Bernard of Marseilles, Chris (Ron) Rosengren of Serena, Anthony Hinterlong of Sheridan, Andrew Hinterlong of Streator and Angela (Michael) Black of Elkhart, Indiana.  Also surviving are brothers, Russ (Loretta) Hinterlong of Sheridan, Don (Pat) Hinterlong and Lee Hinterlong all of Naperville; and a sister, Lois (Jerry) Testin of Plainfield.  He also leaves grandchildren, Cheryl (Jason) Stewart, Michael (Tami) Rosengren, Robert Rosengren, Jonathan Rosengren, Hayley Hinterlong, Leigh Hinterlong and Candice (Kurt) Ruark; and seven great-grandchildren.

Howard was of the Catholic faith.  He was a graduate of Marmion Academy in Aurora.  He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps.  Howard was a member of Laborers Local 288 in Westmont, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, AMVETS, and the Tiger Athletics Association of Aurora.  He was co-owner and operator of Hinterlong’s Red Top Restaurant on Hill Avenue in Aurora from 1982 to 1996 and Bess’s Diner on Montgomery Road from 1996 to 2006.  He had also been employed as building monitor for the City of Aurora Phillips Park Visitors Center.

Howard believed in working hard as well as playing hard.  He was always known to work two or three jobs to provide for his family who he dearly loved.  His leisure time would find him motorcycling, boating, traveling and racing stock cars.  Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society or to St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, P.O.
