Harland Daniel Warren

Harland Daniel Warren, 90, of Ottawa died Sunday, May 13, 2007 at Community Hospital of Ottawa. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Friday, at Gladfelter Funeral Home with Rev. Jonathan Crail, pastor of the Harding United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Harding Cemetery with full military honors by the Earlville American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ottawa Chapter, Ottawa, Ill. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Mr. Warren was born August 18, 1916 in Serena Township, to Daniel John and Mayme Mabel (Ferguson) Warren. He graduated from Serena High School in 1934, the University of Illinois in 1938 and the University of South Dakota College of Law in 1941. He married Helen Myrtle Bowers. He was a personal property and personal injury investigator for Country Companies Insurance in Cook County from June of 1941 until he went into the U. S. Navy in March of 1942. He was commissioned ensign and served in the South Pacific Amphibious for two years, awarded three Battle Stars and was in Charleston, South Carolina until July of 1946 and was discharged as a Lt. Commander for one year in Charleston, South Carolina Naval Base, he was Chief Defense Legal Counsel for Navy and Marine Court Martial Defendants. When he was discharged from the Navy in 1946 he started his law practice with Tom Anderson, Sr. in Earlville. During that time with Mr. Anderson, he secured a Non-Profit Corporation for the Earlville American Legion to which he is still a dues paying member. He also incorporated the Serena Community Fire Protection District, the first Trustee being, William Temple, R. Gordon Lucas and Wayne Borchsenius. Under the new Rural Drainage District Law of 1948 incorporated a number of local Drainage Districts. He was there four years and moved his practice to Ottawa in October of 1949 where he set up his own private practice. He was elected to the States Attorney Office of LaSalle County in November of 1952 and served two terms until December of 1960. He served one term in the State Legislature from 1963-1964. He was elected to the Board of Directors in 1960 to the Ottawa Savings Bank and retired in January 2001. He was a member of the Harding Methodist Church before he moved his law practice to Ottawa in October 1949. He became a member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Ottawa. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2470 of Ottawa and is still a dues paying member. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association. He is survived by his wife, two sons, John Harland Warren of Springfield, Ill., and Harland Warren, Jr. of Ottawa; a daughter, Anne R. Smith of Ottawa; a granddaughter, Karen (Robert) Norris of Ottawa; three great grandchildren, April Smith, Audrey Plique and Robert Norris, Jr. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Russell and two in infancy, Lewis and John. Pallbearers will be Stuart, Bradley and Michael Warren, William Brignon, David Brown and Gary Sampson. Memorials may be directed to the Harding Methodist Church.
