OTTAWA - Harland F. Battles, age 94, of Ottawa, passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009 at the Ottawa Pavilion where he lived for a brief time. Funeral services honoring his life will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Gladfelter Funeral Home with Pastor Doug Williams officiating. Interment will follow in Oakwood Memorial Park. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Harland was born October 9, 1915 in Freedom Township, LaSalle County, Illinois, a son of Harold and Hazel Blanche (Fogg) Battles. He married Marjorie Duffy December 30, 1935 in Ottawa. She preceded him in death September 3, 2000. He is survived by children, Judy (Bill) Newbury, Cheri Link and Jerry (Jane) Battles all of Ottawa and Dan (Tracy) Battles of Renssalear, New York. He also leaves a sister, Shirley (Lloyd) Larson of Freedom Township; ten grandchildren, one step grandchild, eighteen great-grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren and one step-great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded indeath by his parents and step-father, William McCutcheon; a son-in-law, Phil Link and three brothers, Sherman, Robert and Leo Battles. Harland was a member of the Evangelical United Methodist Church in Ottawa. He was a retired truck driver. He also belonged to the Moose Lodge and American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards and golfing at the Dayton Ridge Golf Course. Harland and Marjorie dearly enjoyed taking fishing trips to Minnesota in years past. Above all, Harland deeply loved his family and will be truly missed. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Evangelical United Methodist Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
