George C. Hupp, Sr.

George C. Hupp, Sr. of Haines City, Florida, formerly of Ottawa, Illinois, died at home on March 21, 2019.

A memorial service will be held at Gladfelter-Roetker Funeral Home in Ottawa on Saturday, April 6, 2019 at 5 p.m. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. prior to the memorial service. Graveside service will follow at West Bend Serena Cemetery.

George C. Hupp was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on March 27, 1924. He attended midshipman school at Miami of Ohio University. As a member of the United States Navy during World War II he served as an officer on an LST ship during the battle of Okinawa. He married Nada Gentleman in Crown Point, Indiana, on August 9, 1947. She died on February 22, 2011.

George graduated from the University of Nebraska Law School and started practicing law in Ottawa in 1950. His son joined the law firm in 1978. He semi-retired as an attorney in 1989, then served three years as a judge of the Thirteenth Judicial Circuit Court of Lasalle County, Illinois. The law firm he founded with Frederick W. Irion in 1950 went through several name changes but survives today as Burton, Fuller & Associates P.C. George was a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 50 years and served as Lieutenant District Governor. He was a founding member of Faith Lutheran Church of Ottawa. Most importantly, he knew Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.

He is survived by his daughter, Jan Carol (Ray Davis) Sortore of Spring Hill, Kansas; a son, George "Skip" (Lois) Hupp of Ottawa; five grandchildren: Jennifer (Walter) Chiraboga of Spring Hill, Kansas; Mary Melissa (Stephen) Craft of Columbus, Ohio; Amy Louise Hupp of Ottawa; George C. "Brian" (Jessica) Hupp IV of Raymore, Missouri; and Meredith Elaine (Frederick Brent) Leatherwood of Nashville, Tennessee; and eight great-grandchildren.

His wife was stricken with Polio in 1955. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions therefore may be made to PolioPlus, a program wherein Rotary International has eradicated polio from all but two countries in the world.
