WEST ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA – Betty M. Capsel, age 89, of West St. Paul, Minnesota, formerly of Ottawa, passed away Monday, July 15, 2013 at South View Acres in West St. Paul.
Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, July 20 at Riverview Cemetery in Marseilles with Pastor Peter Ward officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Gladfelter Funeral Home.
Betty was born November 30, 1923 in LaSalle County, Illinois, a daughter of Marshall and Ella (Bevington) Olson. She married William Capsel April 20, 1945 in Ottawa. He preceded her in death July 31, 1990. She is survived by her children, William M. Capsel of Lacey, Washington, Michael L. (Gayle Frigg) Capsel of Hoquiam, Washington and Gina L. Capsel of Lacey, Washington. She also leaves grandchildren, Matthew (Jennifer) Capsel and Marcy (Jeremy) Matthew and great-grandchildren, Noah Matthew and Isabella Capsel. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Elsiejean Canaday.
For 25 years, Betty taught at Grand Ridge, Deer Park, Wedron and Lincoln Elementary Schools. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church where she was a former choir member and Sunday School teacher. Betty volunteered with the American Cancer Society and was very active both in the March of Dimes and assisting with polio vaccination drives. She was president for 12 years of the Pink Ladies Auxiliary and was a member of the Ottawa Women’s Club.
